Continuous – with Jenny Irene Miller

Jenny Irene Miller, Inupiaq, presents her recent body of work, Continuous. Using the camera as a tool for social change—Jenny shares her process of exploring Indigenous identity, sexual orientation, gender diversity, discrimination, and pride—and how those elements overlap, diverge, and inform each other.  

Continuous features distinct Alaska Native lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and Two-Spirit (LGBTQ2) people, who come from unique tribal backgrounds. This photographic series, supplemented by stories from its subjects, shares what it means to be Alaska Native and part of the LGBTQ2 community, and how those identities can empower. Continuous recognizes their existence and strength, both individually and as a community.

Jenny first conceptualized this project in 2012 and began making portraits in 2015. She was awarded an annual grant in 2016 from the Alaska Humanities Forum for Continuous. The body of work first exhibited in Anchorage in both January and April 2017.
