ALASKA PHOTOGRAPHIC CENTER – Rarefied Light/Workshop 2026
Seeing Photographically – COLOR, LIGHT, ACTION, PATTERN
In this workshop Nevada will dissect what it means to “see photographically”. How to
convert “looking” to acutely “seeing” the creative potential in front of you, and then how
to translate it into a compelling photograph.
It might be the use of analogous color in landscapes. Or maybe compelling action in
warm late afternoon light. Or a repetitive pattern with contrasting colors and intriguing
shadows. Or… There are numerous possibilities, if you unite at least two of CLAP
(color, light, action, pattern).
Color: Most photographers do not understand the importance of color and its role in, not
only, conveying mood and emotion, but in basic composition.
Light: Photography means ‘write with light’. Nevada will discuss the personality of light
at all times of the day, from the harsh daylight to blue hour and into night.
Action: Nevada discusses how to extract the feel of a moment using, not only stop
action, but panning and slow shutter speeds.
Pattern: Delve into the power of impeccable framing in the camera for a compelling
composition, as well as how repetitive patterns will strengthen the flow in your images.
Nevada shares her tips on how to photograph more insightfully and creatively, even in
some of the harshest light, to create beautiful images you know exist and your mind
imagines, but your technical expertise is lacking. Nevada dissects ways to see more
creatively and “photographically”, as well as tips on using color powerfully. In this 2-day
workshop, she also discusses how to approach and photograph people in foreign lands
to create natural, respectful, and unique portraits. Nevada’s emphasis is on elevating
your creative vision and expanding your photographic technique.

Juror Lecture planned for August 13th. Details to come.
