In 2013, at the age of 27, O’Hara Shipe’s life took a dramatic turn. After spending the majority of the previous 22 years of her life diligently guarding the net for various ice hockey teams around the world, Shipe suffered a career ending injury. Over the next six years she would endure four surgeries, hundreds of medical tests and the ultimate diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder, Post-Concussion Syndrome, ME/CFS and Fibromyagia. However, throughout the dark periods, Shipe discovered her passion for the human connection associated with creating photographic portraits.
In her lecture, Shipe will discuss the role photography has played in her life post-professional sports. She will also share anecdotal tips for helping to naturally draw out the character of your subjects to create a memorable, authentic portrait.
