This workshop will explore the photo essay as a way to reveal the nature of a person (or people) in context, over time. A compelling picture story sets the scene, introduces the characters, evokes a mood, and shows the conflict with all of its consequences. Participants are encouraged to think about simple story ideas before class. Through slide presentations and critiques we will discuss techniques for lifestyle, photojournalism, fashion and traditional portraiture.

Key topics will be: approaching people, collaborating with them and encouraging them to feel at ease. Most importantly, we will cover techniques for editing, sequencing and presentation.

In preparation for class, please read Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking by David Bayles and Ted Orland.

Familiarize yourself with “The Country Doctor,” by W. Eugene Smith from Life Magazine.

Prints are recommended to facilitate critiques.
